It has to be recognized the negative impact that different human activities have on biodiversity in general and the need to mitigate this negative impact through active conservation measures. This is also the case for the Lespezi quarry that is located within the limits of the Bucegi Natural Park. This protected area is also part of the Natura 2000 conservation network as a Special Area of Conservation ROSCI0013 situated in the Alpine biogeographical region covering an area of 38787 ha.
As a Natura 2000 site the main aim is to maintain the favorable conservation status for habitats and species of conservation interest at European level (in other words to protect native species and the ecological processes that they require for long term maintenance). In this context any rehabilitation activity svhould be based on the scientific research and should allow reconnecting the existing quarry with the surrounding natural fluxes and processes at landscape level.
This project proposal has the objective to identify the habitat suitability in the Lespezi quarry area ( 45°18'21.16"N, 25°24'26.11"E) and in its surroundings in order to predict favorable conditions for biodiversity in different rehabilitation scenarios. A biodiversity map will be done in the project area and different rehabilitation scenarios will be proposed.
The main activities proposed in this project are:
1) Description of the project area (including surrounding landscape);
2) Critical analysis of the available datasets (species occurrence data, habitats, soil types, slope, digital elevation model, aspect etc.);
3) Field survey for terrestrial fauna and flora in the project area;
4) Modelling of species distribution as a base for rehabilitation scenarios;
5) Development of rehabilitation scenarios.
This framework is designed specifically to maximize the use of currently existing information for the area as well as newly obtained ones necessary for the assessments of the biodiversity inventory in order to allow the decision makers to make scientifically sound decisions. It is also designed to communicate the results of complex data analyses to a broad range of partners, stakeholders and other decision makers.
